Stop the Pest Attack! 7 Mistakes Indian Pet Parents Make with Flea and Tick Protection
Our furry friends—be they a playful Labrador or a cuddly Persian cat—are a part of our parivaar (family). But there are tiny troublemakers, the fleas and ticks, that can cause big problems.
These parasites are not just irritating; they are blood-sucking villains! They cause nasty skin irritation, and worse, they can bring life-threatening diseases like Lyme disease or ehrlichiosis (a tick-borne illness common in India). Protecting our bachcha (child) is non-negotiable.
Many of us, even with the best intentions, make simple mistakes that leave our pets vulnerable to these creepy-crawlies. Let’s look at the seven most common mistakes and how we can be better, smarter pet parents!
The Common Gaps in Our Defence
1. “A Skip Here and There Won’t Hurt, Chalta Hai” (It’s fine)
This is the biggest mistake! We often think, “I missed this month’s dose; I’ll give it next week.” But fleas are mahaguru (masters) of reproduction—one flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day! Missing even a few days of protection creates a gap, turning a single parasite into a home infestation (pura ghar bhar jaana).
- Smart Fix: Set a reminder on your phone or mark your calendar like you would a birthday. Never miss a dose. If you do, call your vet immediately.
2. Stopping Prevention in Winter (Sardi Mein Rok Dena)
In India, especially the northern regions, we often feel the cold stops the parasites. Wrong! Ticks can be active even in mild winter temperatures, and fleas happily live and breed indoors in our carpets, blankets, and pet bedding all year round.
- Smart Fix: Think of the treatment as a year-round insurance policy. Your pet needs it 12 months a year, rain or shine, summer or winter.
3. Mixing Products Without Consulting the Vet (Doctor se Bina Pooche Dawa Milana)
Some parents feel, “If one product is good, two must be better!” So they mix a spot-on treatment with a medicated collar. This is extremely dangerous! Many products have similar ingredients, and doubling up can lead to a toxic overdose, causing tremors, vomiting, or even seizures.
- Smart Fix: Stick to your vet’s recommendation. Never mix or switch products without their guidance. They know your pet’s exact needs.
4. Using Dog Products on Your Cat (Kutte ki Dawa Billi ko Dena)
If you have both a dog and a cat, this is a fatal mistake. Many dog flea/tick treatments contain an ingredient called Permethrin, which is poisonous to cats. A small drop meant for a dog can cause severe, life-threatening neurological damage in a cat.
- Smart Fix: Only use products labelled specifically for cats. Keep treated dogs away from cats until the treatment is completely dry.
5. Guessing the Dose (Andaza Lagakar Dawa Dena)
Whether it’s a spot-on pipette or a tablet, you must follow the instructions precisely. Giving less medicine means it won’t kill all the parasites. Giving more can lead to toxic side effects. These products are carefully formulated based on your pet’s exact weight.
- Smart Fix: Never guess. Read the label or, better yet, follow your veterinarian’s written instructions.
6. “My Pet Stays Indoors, Isko Kya Hoga?” (What will happen to my pet?)
Even if your dog or cat never steps outside, they are not completely safe. Fleas and ticks are excellent hitchhikers. They can come inside on your clothes, shoes, a delivery person, or even another family pet who briefly goes outside. Once inside, they reproduce quickly in your home environment.
- Smart Fix: Indoor pets need year-round protection too. Prevention is always easier and cheaper than treating a full-blown infestation in your home!
7. Relying Only on Routine Vaccines (Sirf Tikon pe Bharosa Rakhna)
Vaccines (like those for rabies or parvo) are essential for protecting against viral diseases. However, vaccines do NOT protect against fleas and ticks. They are two separate things. While a vaccine for a tick-borne illness like Lyme exists, it doesn’t stop the tick from biting in the first place.
- Smart Fix: Your pet’s health plan must include both vaccinations for diseases AND flea/tick preventatives for parasites.
A Little Nuskha (Advice)
The best defense against these tiny attackers is consistency and knowledge. Set up a simple, non-negotiable routine with your vet, and stick to it—every month, every year.
