Your Golden Smile: The Secret Behind Those Gentle-Yet-Strong Teeth (Daant ki Kahani)
Our Golden Retrievers are famous for their loving hearts and their incredibly gentle mouths. Did you know their ancestors were hunting dogs who needed a “soft mouth”? It meant they could pick up their catch and bring it back without leaving a single scratch—talk about a delicate touch!
Even though they are known for their dulaar (affection) and gentle grip, Goldens are large dogs with a naturally strong bite. Since they use their mouth for everything—chewing toys, carrying things, and investigating the world—we, as their parents, need to pay extra close attention to keeping those teeth healthy. A healthy smile means a happy, long life!
The Changing of the Teeth: Your Puppy’s Teething Phase (Daant Badalna)
Just like when a child loses their milk teeth, your little Golden puppy goes through a phase where their baby teeth fall out to make way for the strong, permanent set.
When Does This Nayi Shuruaat (New Beginning) Happen?
- First Appearance: The tiny baby teeth (doodh ke daant) start popping out when your puppy is only about 3 weeks old. They look like little needles!
- The Big Change: The permanent, adult teeth—the ones they’ll keep for life—start pushing through around 4 months old.
- Mission Complete:By the time your Golden is 6 to 7 months old, this replacement process is usually done, and they have their full, handsome set of adult teeth.
A Crucial Tip: Sometimes, the adult tooth is too fast, and the baby tooth doesn’t fall out (especially the long canine teeth). If you see two teeth growing in the same spot, it’s called a retained baby tooth. Think of it as a traffic jam in the mouth! It needs a quick visit to the vet because keeping it there can cause major dental problems later.
