Humari Safar, Unka Aaram: Preparing Your Dog for Boarding ✈️🏡
Planning a trip (safed) is exciting, but for pet parents, the biggest question is always, “Who will look after our bachcha (child)?” If your dog can’t join you, a good boarding centre can be a safe and fun ‘home away from home’ (doosra ghar).
Leaving your dog can cause anxiety (chinta) for both of you, so here are three simple ways to prepare them for their temporary stay.
1. The Right Place & Timely Tayaari (Preparation)
Choosing the right facility is the most important step in giving you peace of mind.
- Book Jaldi (Early): If you are travelling during major holidays (like Diwali, Christmas, or summer break), book your preferred centre ASAP. The best places fill up weeks in advance! Don’t take a chance on a last-minute spot that might not meet your standards.
- Match the Vibe: Think about your dog’s personality.
- If your dog is a social butterfly who loves playing full-time masti, choose a centre with supervised group playtime.
- If your dog is quiet or older and prefers chilling (aaram), look for smaller, quieter settings where they get individual attention. Make sure the centre can replicate your dog’s regular routine (food timings, walk schedules).
- Trial Run (Ek Din Ka Stay): If possible, book your dog for a short one-day stay or a few hours before your main trip. This helps them get familiar with the staff and the smells, making the big separation much easier later.
2. The Comfort Kit (Apnapan Ka Samaan)
When your dog is surrounded by new things, a little bit of home goes a long way.
- Bring the Favourite Khilona (Toy): Pack their most cherished toy, blanket, or even an old, unwashed T-shirt of yours. The familiar smell acts as a powerful comfort mechanism, helping reduce separation stress.
- Stick to Their Diet: If the boarding centre allows, pack your dog’s regular food. Sudden changes in diet, combined with the stress of a new place, can easily lead to stomach issues (pait kharab). Consistency is key to a happy tummy!
3. Clear Instructions & Health Checks
Communication is vital to ensure their care doesn’t skip a beat.
- Health and Vaccine Records: MANDATORY: Always ensure your dog’s vaccinations (tika) are up-to-date (especially rabies and core vaccines). Keep their medical file or vaccination card handy, as most good centres require it before accepting your pet.
- The Nuskha Note (Detailed Instructions): Write down everything important:
- Any daily medication timings.
- Small behaviour quirks (e.g., “barks when the doorbell rings” or “needs quiet time after eating”).
- Emergency contact numbers for your vet.
By doing this little bit of prep, you can enjoy your trip knowing your furry friend is safe, comfortable, and well looked after!
